Cornered and alone, Fredrik turned to the Orders for financial aid and did what had previously seemed unthinkable: he paid the Alchemist’s price to secure peace with Nepenthe, offering Riismark’s famed steel. His decision was challenged even by his two closest allies, but Fredrik swore an oath: this did not mean long-lasting peace, and the debt would be settled the way it should.
